Commercial Mobile Air Conditioning Units: Rooftop Units

Roof-mounted air conditioning units are compact, simple in design, and can handle the requirements of off-road vehicles. When it comes to mobile equipment air conditioning, there are many solutions that meet the needs of all applications. The main priority is to ensure operators are safe and comfortable during the hot summer months and to keep equipment running at an ideal temperature.

In this article, we highlight the classic mobile rooftop unit, how it works, and its benefits.

What is a rooftop unit?

As the name implies, a packaged rooftop unit is installed on the roof of commercial off-road equipment. Rooftop units are a popular choice for heavy-duty industries such as construction, mining, agriculture, and the military. The compact unit includes all of the components required to provide conditioned air, including:

  • Evaporator coil
  • Fan
  • Compressor
  • Condenser

How does a rooftop unit work?

Air goes into the rooftop unit – some units mix outdoor air with the returning air to improve air quality and for ventilation. Low-pressure refrigerant travels through the compressor as a gas. As it flows into the condenser coil, it compresses into a hot, high-pressure gas. The coil absorbs the heat and the condenser blows the exhaust away.

The condenser coil chills air by running it through a standard refrigeration cycle:

  • The cool liquid refrigerant travels through the evaporator coil and the liquid converts back to a gas.
  • Warm air passes over the evaporator coil and the refrigerant extracts the heat from the air.
  • The fan blows the cooler air back into the space.

At Polar Mobility, most of our units have 3-speed blower motors that can adjust to the operator’s needs and we offer available pre-installed panel filters to clean the air.

The benefits of a commercial rooftop unit

Rooftop units offer some unique perks compared to other systems. Rooftop units:

  • Are quieter than in-cabin units
  • Saves cabin space
  • Are easy to install and maintain
  • Have more ventilation options to improve air quality
  • Are easy to access
  • Are made with heavy gauge steel to handle tough environments

These rugged units are made with heavy gauge steel available with heat and pressurization that is strong enough to get the job done. Easy access to servicing your unit through a rubber latched cover makes quick adjustments less time-consuming.
